Quinceañera

A celebration of thanksgiving to God for the gift of fifteen years of life — and a young woman’s loving “yes” to the Lord and to Our Lady.

A celebration of thanksgiving

The Quinceañera is a beautiful tradition in which a young woman, on her fifteenth birthday, gives thanks to God for the gift of her life. Having grown in faith and grace, she comes before the altar to renew the baptismal promises made for her as a child, now professing them with her own voice. She entrusts her future to the Blessed Virgin Mary, asking Our Lady to be her guide and model as she steps toward womanhood. Surrounded by family, godparents, and friends, she offers her whole life — her hopes, her gifts, her path ahead — to the Lord who has loved her from the beginning.

A blessing, not a sacrament

The Quinceañera is celebrated within a Mass or with a special blessing, but it is not a sacrament. Its heart is gratitude and a renewed commitment to live as a faithful disciple of Christ. For this reason the preparation focuses not on the festivities, but on deepening the young woman’s relationship with God and her place in the life of the Church.

What is needed

  • The family should be registered, participating parishioners.
  • The young woman should be baptized, and ideally have received First Holy Communion.
  • She should be enrolled in faith formation (catechism) and growing in her practice of the faith.
  • A preparation session or retreat may be required to prepare her heart for the celebration.
  • Please arrange with the parish office several months in advance so the date and details can be set.
